Listening to the news the other day about plastic bags where they mentioned the over buying of plastic bags for life, the ones that cost 10p. Apparently we all brought 53 each last year.
I brought one large plastic bag in the whole of 2019 when I brought a new coat. Whose got my other 52, I wonder? And if they have, how come they had £5.20 to throw away on mine plus the £5.30 for their own?
That's £10.50 they could have given directly to a charity to save the planet.
.I feel just like my old Mum in the 1960s when she used to horde and covert plastic carrier bags. I get one at the butchers or fishmongers once a month and I am very stingy with who or what gets to re use them!
I agree, we have not purchased a plastic bag in over a year, so who got mine.
ReplyDeleteHeard that on the radio when I was driving somewhere the other day and had the same thought.....as I only bought one 10p one last year because I wanted it to keep things separated in the big freezer and the cheap ones disintegrate so quickly.
ReplyDeleteIn the past I have tied the cheaper ones to bamboo canes in the garden to rattle and flash at the pigeons but had to stop because after a few weeks they were disintegrating into shards or faded colours. They don't stand up to much!
DeleteI don't remember the last time I bought a plastic bag. We always have cloth and heavy plastic reusable ones in the car and I keep one that goes in a little pouch in my purse. We just watched a documentary on tv last night. Apparently a lot of our (Canada) recycled plastics go to the Philippines. Turns out they have MOUNTAINS of our plastic bags just sitting there doing nothing. The people are saying please stop sending it to us as we have no use for it. I don't know how or why it was ever sent there to start with!
ReplyDeleteSome years back I tried an experiment with recycling plastic bags. First I tried the knitting the strips into a bag for wet clothes at the beach. It was OK. Second I tried ironing various layers together to make a thick new plastic mat that I could kneel on in the garden. It was OK but you had to use the better quality ones. Goodness knows what they would do in Philippines with them.
DeleteI stood behind a young couple in a supermarket 10 days ago, they'd done s large shop coming to £185. They bought 6 10p carrier bags and they could have done with another 2 but decided to just take it to the car in the trolley. I guess they've got bags at home! Like you I take my own, I did buy a new one last week. Yes I could have asked for a replacement as the handle broke but the bag money goes to charity.
ReplyDeleteFor heavens sake! You don't go out unintentionally to do that much shopping they must have known they were going to need bags. Bet they did not have a shopping list or a meal plan either. You
DeleteThe grocery store I always go to in now charging for the plastic bags used to pack groceries. I have always recycled my bags and will now have to remember to bring my bags with me. I may even have to make a few more.
ReplyDeleteGod bless.
Mine are all home made too. I make them for family as well. Sons have asked for more "masculine" designs and material!! LOL
