Seed potatoes

We did some calculating last week on last year's poor harvest. We covered the cost of the seed (£21) and had the equivalent of 4 bags of potatoes up to December which would have cost £30 at least. So when we went to purchase this years seed potatoes we were careful not to overspend.  £17.50 only. We are going to be very careful not to loose any to frost in the shed when chitting them this year (bad mistake not to protect them when we had the Beast from the East cold period).

I also got some more garlic. The short row already in is growing well over the winter. I did not do much garlic last year and have had to buy 14 or so bulbs since the autumn.  With my husband's onions grown from seed coming along well, potatoes, garlic and onions should cover about one-third on the veg garden and give us some good basics for autumn and winter.

  1. It was a funny old year last year wasn't it? We had great success with some things (like butternut squashes, our best year ever), not so good with others. Not as many courgettes as usual, amazingly as we're normally inundated with them, and the potatoes weren't as plentiful either. Most of our onions went to seed early in the season, but leeks have done fabulously and we still have lots in the garden.

  2. We can only hope for better. We may need the food according to the silly news!
