Mis-shaped veg
Having watched Hugh FW's War on Waste programme (BBC 1 Monday) I can see Morrisons would not want my sweet peppers!
Huge final pile from the 3 plants I cleared today from the poly tunnel to give more room to some Christmas potatoes and probably only one would meet a "cosmetic" standard.
I felt very sorry for the Norfolk farmers who could not make a profit from the parsnips grown for a supermarket - they were beauties and it was criminal to waste them! Wonky veg does not worry me as long as it tastes OK and lasts a week at least in a fridge.

The big supermarkets dominate so many farmers lives, with waste of good food and keeping the prices they pay so low, almost every special price we see is at the cost to the farmers.
ReplyDeleteI read a super book not long ago about starting a market garden in somerset and tackling the T'co regime by an ex-journalist. It was not just the farmers but in that instance the local town (Ilminster) was ruined by its presence was so inspired I stopped going in that particular supermarket! the writer Rosie Boycott later became a food advisor to Boris J in London but nothing has changed since 2009.
DeleteI haven't seen the program yet and hope to catchup on my days off. I'm sure if this veg was sold at a slight discount it would fly off the shelves. Most veg ends up being chopped up. Its very rare we eat it whole so look is not important.
