British sugar

We live in an area of huge sugar beet production so it was with great annoyance that I heard the news that Tesco is not going to stock British granulated sugar.

Tesco has sparked outrage by pulling British sugar from its shelves - despite one of its biggest stores being right next to the factory that makes it.The supermarket giant is now importing stock from as far as 5,000 miles away in countries such as Belize rather than using bags made from British beet. (Peterborough News)

Silver Spoon sugar, produced with British sugar beet, was rolled out nationally in 1972.

The Bury St Edmunds packaging complex is the company’s largest packing site, featuring the most modern packaging plant in Europe, responsible for producing 70% of Silver Spoon’s 1kg packs of granulated sugar.
Every year, 2,000,000 tonnes of sugar beet are produced by 1,000 UK growers – with the average distance just 28 miles from the factory.  (East Anglian  Daily Times)

I have been reluctant to use this supermarket for years due to their supply strategies and business (non) ethics.
So sorry, Tes-Co, no matter how many coupons and offers you make I will not willingly be a customer of yours.

  1. I wonder who thinks their business plans through? I don't rate them at all. We also live in an area of huge sugar beet crops and a large sugar factory nearby.

  3. I hate T**** with a passion but unfortunately I'm stuck with shopping there. We have a W******e but I find it too expensive and we have A**a but as I shop at night I rarely go there as the carpark has become a meeting place for gangs of youths and is quite scary-x-

    1. I was once attacked (luckily still in my car and able to lock doors) by a group of thugs late at night in an ASDA car park in a city centre - avoid anywhere like it since!

  4. We boycott Tosco's completely. When my husband was in business he had to deal with the company concerning their building, T***o wanted to alter terms of contract, DH said no, they said you have to we are T***os, DHs response was we don't want the work and walked away. They threatened to go to the directors but if DH said no, the directors always backed him.

There are just the two of us, both retired, we shop at local butchers, he has a small holding where he raises pigs and grows some vegetables, at weekly farmers market and at Waitrose which we don't find too expensive if we buy seasonally, take advantage of offers, misshapen vegetables, My Waitrose card and own brands. We try to be ethical, hence supporting one supermarket over the other. We cook from scratch but do go for quality as I think of food as medicine too.

Just before Christmas we went back to doorstep deliveries of milk in glass bottles, more for convenience than price. Does mean we don't need to go to supermarket so often, thus saving petrol (can't carry much shopping otherwise would use the bus) and aren't tempted to impulse buy.

    1. Well done that man! We are pretty self sufficient in fruit and veg too. Good idea about the milk - it is the one thing that drags us back.

  5. This is terrible news :-(

I only buy Silver Spoon sugar, so they will be losing me as a customer.
