To renew or not to renew?

Yesterday the renewal for our car rescue/breakdown arrived. We took it out last September when we went to Scotland by car.  How could it go up £23 more with a no claim discount because we had not called them to rescue us all year? raged the husband.  I shall complain and he put it on the side.

Today we went to 60 miles south to collect a dingy as we are downsizing our boating hobby from an 18 ft boat to an 8 foot boat.  Pleasant seller but would you believe the so called roadworthy trailer blew a tyre less than 8 miles up the road?  Husband admitted the seller had never given his mobile number so had no way to contact him and it was too far and too hot to walk back to his house.

We rang the car rescue number expecting that some small print would mean help was not possible.  Despite some mobile connection problems (well, it was the middle of Norfolk, notorious for poor signals) the call centre was efficient enough and promised help. The service was a bit slow and we had to wait 1 and a half hours for a lorry who had been told it was the car  tyre that had blown out and was surprised to be asked to help with the trailer. And the garage he took the trailer and boat to took another hour to fit two new tyres.

I think the rescue more than covered last year's subscription.  Perhaps we should not question next year's bill after all!

  1. I'd still check out the competition! Or even phone your present company and ask if that's the best they can do.

  2. What a day! I should think you were glad to get home. Breakdown recovery is necessary but expensive.

  3. Wow, I am glad you had the breakdown insurance. Our CAA seems to go up every year as well.

    God bless.

  4. Trish, you were lucky it was 'only' £23. For the past three or four years when our renewal arrived, the company (meant to be the most used breakdown service in the country) upped the fee by £100. I was not best pleased. I suggested that instead of expecting customers simply to pay up and shut up, they looked after their regular customers by offering a discount when they had not needed to use the service, but of course, they wouldn't make money like that, would they? But I said that if they didn't reduce the fee to what it had been I would leave. They reduced it forthwith. They just try it on.

  5. Must be something about boats - well, their trailers. My brother's had more trouble with his trailer than with the boat!

  6. Insurance is away's the same, expensive until you use it, but we are never without it.
