I had been complaining that I had never successfully grown spring onions although my eldest son always says they are easy and grows loads. My husband got some seed tape spring onions this year and grew them in our poly tunnel so that he could keep up the watering. They are just making good progress now and the thinning are just big enough to decorate a meal. Quite impressed with the seed tape idea as the row is nice and straight and evenly spaced!
We decided to try aubergines this year. Could not find any plants in the garden centres for ages then came across a pathetic specimen a couple of weeks ago. We questioned the staff about having any more and they took one look and took the rest off sale as "pathetic". We took the best one for £1.39 with a promise to replace if it failed from the staff. Its been in the greenhouse and been re-potted and is just about picking up. Never grown one before and hopefully it will provide some fruits for us to experiment with later.
An old experiment from 4 years back is coming to life this year. This is our Kiwi fruit. Its looking the best ever this year and even has flowers. I wonder if it will fruit at last?
Aubergines are easy enough once they get going. I've got 5 plants in the greenhouse hope they have more than one on each.
ReplyDeleteHave tried celery but slug problems with the ones that need blanching and the so-called self blanching were green and bitter.
Lovely to try new stuff each year.
Only 1 fruit? Oh well that will pay for itself then as they are usually about £1.50 in the supermarket?
DeleteHi Trish, you may already know this and have both but you need both male and female plants for kiwi fruit. You can have more than one female for each male plant.

The sales leaflet said it was self fertile - but if nothing happens I will try that instead!
DeleteWe had a kiwi tree over the fence in our back garden, it’s been chopped down, the blossom is beautiful, the fruits always fell off in December and were hard, I did try to ripe some, but was never successful. I have a plant I raised from seed last year in my greenhouse.
ReplyDeleteI tried aubergine last year but I gave up. I still have seeds so perhaps I should give it a go.
ReplyDeleteSue says they are easy so I shall keep going with it!
