End of January

Thank goodness the end of the month is here! We knew money was tight and kept our hands tight, the month ends with £58.45 in the bank account and £20 in the purse. We are having a break from mince for the next week and looking for some changes in the spring menu.

Last Sunday it was snowing all day. This Sunday its been 14C in the garden with bright sunshine and a steady drying wind.  Some things coming on in the garden, clumps of snowdrops and some flowers on the early cherry tree.

Got a few hours in tidying around the garden this week between wet periods. Went to tidy the tunnel some more and dug out all the strawberry runners and some of the clumps that did not look too good or were too close to one another. They grew so thickly last year it was hard work finding the fruit.  Unfortunately I found 3 or 4 vine weevil in the roots. So we have to do some treatments quickly.

When I went up to the bonfire I found something has been eating some of the new boundary hedge saplings from underneath - mice, mole, ???  There were some holes and tunnels going into next door where he dumps all his grass cuttings. Looks like poison may be the only answer. While we were looking around we could see a clear "animal" path through the long grass behind the hedge so something must be hunting/browsing out there. My husband will put out the nature camera to see what is going on first.

  1. January always seems an extra long month. I've finally managed to get hold of some manure to treat the garden to.

  3. January is always the hardest month of the year, every where is so dull, nice to be able to get into the garden.
