Haircuts?

Where do you stand on the haircutting issue in our Covid world? We both went once in August and felt quite safe as the national rates were low, extremely low in our county, and the procedures were all in place. But the "joy" of the occasion was spoilt by about 25% by the whole safety process and the lack of buzz about the place. Its just a local one room establishment but it is always busy and chatty. Also the price had gone well up (from £17.50 to £21.00)!

Another advantage is the cost. I just looked at the accounts and last year we spent £215 on hair cuts between us. I know its not a lot, some people pay more on one visit but its a lot for pensioners. This year, so far, we have spent £33.28 which includes a packet of old fashioned hair grips!

Its time to think about another appointment. Though we are sad not to support the local business we have both decided as the infection rates rise, and  local schools and food factories have reported cases, we are going to give it a miss.

I now have longer hair (almost pony tail) and just recut my fringe. This morning I trimmed my husbands hair and if I say so myself it does not look half bad!!!

  1. I have mine cut by my neighbour, who luckily is a hairdresser with a small salon built onto the side of her house. She only has 1 person at a time, she uses full protective measures, clean fresh overalls and towels and disinfects all equipment and surfaces between her few clients. I feel as safe as I can be with her.

    1. My husband's fear was his stylist had teenage children who didn't sound the sort to obey the rules and he worries about transference within families.

  2. I saved nearly £50 by doing DIY through lockdown but really needed a proper cut - so had pensioners Tuesday offer wash and cut £14.50. Might DIY again for a month or two.
I don't find going to the hairdressers at all joyful so quite happy to miss out

  3. I last had my hair cut in Feb and have been trimming my fringe ever since - my hair was below shoulders anyway. I could do with the ends trimming off now, though :)

  4. I have cut my husband's hair for about 40 yrs now. My hairdresser, who I have known since she was a little girl, had increased the cost by £2.50 to cover PPE etc. Now I have my hair cut every two months instead of six weeks. I'm not sure that the £2.50 is right as they don't seem to have a lot of protection. There are no shields between the chairs like you have in other places. Also she put on a mask and twisted the elastic round her ears. This means that the mask is not against your face but has a bulge which hasn't any protection. Saw an ambulance worker like that in a shop today.

  5. My hair just don't grow (Just like my maternal grandma's). My last hair cut was over 20 years ago and my hair is now shorter ( but thicker). So covid19 or no covid19, no haircuts for me.

    1. I have fine individual hair but over all it is thick in volume so as its got longer it feels thicker especially at the back where it is also darker.

  6. I enjoyed my outing to the stylists. Her and I always have a great conversation. It was a lot quieter this time though.

    God bless.

  7. I've had my haircut twice now and I'm just thinking about a quick trim before they get shut down again (a possibility as our numbers are up a bit).
Limited number of clients - sign a waiver, sanitizer, wear my mask (always) and have my temperature taken. Wash my hair at home - sit on a chair covered in disposable plastic and wear a disposable cape! Yes, prices are up by 10% plus there is a %5 charge for extra PPE. It's exhausting - but worth it so I don't have to go back to putting my hair up in a bun! Not a good look. :-)

  8. On lockdown we bought a quality clipper that cost f70 and that’s been used on husband and two sons for their haircuts. Previously they went to the barbers and paid £40 per month for all three of them so a saving so far of about £240. I’ve been to the hairdressers twice but now don’t get my roots done so a saving of £45 Per visit and not many people have noticed I’m letting my greys come through and hair is much healthier. So overall as a family we will potentially save over £700:on hair cutting.

    1. It was only after I stopped the colouring that I noticed the slight tinge to my white pillowcases had ceased! More savings in bleach products!! Good savings - what treat have you got it mind?

  9. Our lady had a baby last year and now works from home, she pops to our house and then on to our neighbour, I ensure we leave the door open for the air flow, she wears full face protection, and it only cost £15, so a win in every way. her mum lives close by and babysits until Gemma is finished. I have changed my style, if haircuts stop, it should grow into a long bob, which happened in the summer, still looked good, I don't like my hair that long, but it's what it is.

  10. I'm going to get LB to cut mine as I pin it up most days, so no-one will see if it turns out a bit uneven. I'm done with paying £35 for a wet cut.

    1. Wow that was a lot. I wonder if nationally we will see new hair fashions emerge?

  11. We have been doing haircuts at home for years, my husband is the family barber and stylist, I take a seat on the stool every couple months and my teen boys get their haircuts every three weeks. He invested in a good set of Wahl Designer clippers, peanut clippers, capes, combs, hair clips and pro grade Japanese steel hair shears. Having the right tools and supplies to do the job right makes a big differences, and while other people were scurrying to find them, we were prepared. Hubby has given hundreds of haircuts, and he does an excellent job every time, we are not walking around with wonky looking “Covid Cuts”. I figure we save over $1400 a year insourcing our haircuts. He usually cuts my mom’s hair as well as my best friend having him trim her long hair, but back in the summer, I had a couple other friends visit to grill/hang out on the deck and both asked hubby for a haircut. I set a stool out on the deck and each took a turn taking a seat, getting caped and got a haircut. They were happy with the results and I was glad I could help my friends by sharing my stylist with them. It is great to have a family member that has a knack for cutting hair.
